All Oil, All the Time
(Picture from here.)
Since the oil keeps gushing, I thought it was actually time for me to weigh in.
Not on the spill itself, of course. You can get all the information you need from the net or the papers. Dispersants have their own problems. And we're going to see both our shrimp, oysters and endangered species go down. If this turns out to be politically big enough, like the Santa Barbara oil spill of 1969, it could have a significant impact on the industry. Schwartzenegger has already pulled support for off shore drilling.
But it's the comedy that keeps on giving.
(Full list here.)
Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) has said that the spill was an "act of God" and cannot be prevented. Just give up. And who can forget the comic stylings of Michael Brown when he attempted to manage FEMA in the wake of Katrina. He said Obama wanted the oil spill to happen.
The hits keep on coming. Roland Guidry, oil spill coordinator for Louisiana, said "Those guys don't spill oil." John McCain said the same so it's got to be true.
Even Obama thought it was safe.
George Will thought the resistance to off shore drilling was manufactured by the left so the government has a "rationale to ration."
And we can never forget Sarah Palin's mantra: Drill, Baby, Drill. From the state that brought us the Exxon Valdez.
But the Greatest Hits recording has to be British Petroleum itself.
Who can forget the classic 2005 Texas City disaster that killed 15 and injured 170. Where the company pleaded guilty to federal felony charges. The executives were contrite and shook their heads.
Or the nearly five thousand barrels of oil that leaked through the snow in Palin's very own Alaska in 2006. They'd been warned to check things four years earlier but the costs were "draconian". The executives were contrite and shook their heads.
I'm sure the Gulf spill will go down as an instant classic. And when the aggressive cost cutting, the missing back up safety gear and 100% increase of quarterly earnings are factored in, the executives will be contrite and shake their heads.
Grinning.
